How to Scan a QR Code Safely: Spot Fake QR Codes
← Blog · Updated 8 October 2026
A QR code hides its destination, which scammers use by placing fake codes on posters, parking meters and parcel notices, or by sending them in messages.
How to scan safely
- Use the live QR code scanner or the QR code reader. They show the content as text and do not open links.
- Read the address. Does the domain match the company you expect?
- Only open it if it looks right.
Warning signs
- A sticker placed over another code.
- Shortened links or misspelled names.
- Urgent messages asking you to pay or log in.
- A page that asks for passwords or card details.
If you already opened a bad link
Close the page and do not enter any details. If you did enter a password, change it. If you shared card details, contact your bank.
Questions
Can a QR code itself be harmful?
The code is only data. The risk is in what it leads to, so check the link first.
Is camera scanning in the browser private?
Yes. The camera picture is processed on your device and is not uploaded.
